How This Calculator Works

Point Valuations

Amex Membership Rewards: Valued at 2.0 cents each — achievable via airline transfer partners (ANA, Singapore, Delta) or Schwab cashout at 1.1cpp.

Chase Ultimate Rewards: Valued at 2.0 cents each — achievable via Hyatt transfers (routinely 2-4cpp) or United/Southwest bookings.

Capital One & Citi: Valued at 1.5 cents each. Capital One transfers to Turkish, Avianca; Citi to JetBlue, Turkish Airlines.

Cash back: Valued at 1.0 cent per point — face value, no optimization needed.

Annual Fee Math

Effective fees: Many premium cards include statement credits that reduce the true cost. The Amex Platinum's $695 fee drops to ~$151 after Uber, airline, and Walmart+ credits.

Net value: Your rewards earned minus the effective annual fee. This is the number that matters — a $695 card can deliver more net value than a $0 card.

The 2% baseline: We compare every card against a simple 2% cashback card (like Citi Double Cash). If a premium card can't beat 2% on your spending, it's not worth the fee.

Important Caveats

Category caps: Some cards cap bonus earning. Amex Gold caps supermarket 4x at $25K/year. These caps aren't modeled but rarely matter at typical household spending.

Merchant coding: Some purchases code in unexpected categories. Restaurants inside hotels may code as travel. Online grocery orders may not code as supermarkets.

Approval odds: This calculator doesn't factor in credit score requirements, Chase 5/24, or Amex's once-per-lifetime bonus rules. Research these before applying.
